Well the world economy seems to be teetering on the brink once again. If it's not the Eurozone crisis it's the triple A rating of the US of A. Every news bulletin seemed to be awash with experts telling us it can only get worse.
I'll tell you what worse is. Partick Thistle going down to a dodgy last minute penalty against Dundee. Now that's a disaster of 3 points dropped at home proportion!!
However, if things in the macro economic sphere are going to get worse, then it'll be those in the SME arena which will no doubt disproportionately bear the burden. I'm sure several of the financial and growth Banterers will have a take on where things are going over the next few months and maybe worth having a chat with many of them to find out what that common view is and how we can all avoid any disasters. We could start with getting better referees but that's another issue too.
Last Thursday was probably another record for the Glasgow Business Banter and I don't mean the temperature inside Esquires. Apart from the inaugural Business Banter almost a year ago - see below for notification of the party to celebrate that milestone, we had 16 newbies come along to join the group on the day. A real mix of business people from a cross section of industries and hopefully many of them will come back in the weeks and months ahead.
Information about each of them is noted below and in the individual web pages we've created for them in the Who's Who pages.

The Business Banter has now been running for almost a year and in that time we've met every week in Glasgow, almost every week in Edinburgh and, for a few months at the end of 2010 and start of 2011 weekly in Ayr. It's getting to the stage where I'll have to count them all up to see when we pass the 100 mark.
What started off as an idea to engage with people who I had LinkedIn with has steadily grown to be a major part of a lot of people's weekly diet of networking activity. At the heart of the Business Banter has always been the notion that we want people to meet in a relaxed fashion with no pressure to either sell or be sold to. The vast majority of those who have came along and agreed with that principle and the Banter itself is better for it.
That's not to say that business is not being done between those who come along and a couple of recent examples are noted below.
To celebrate one year of the Business Banter we're inviting all who have came along, and others who keep meaning to come along, to attend our Birthday Bash on Friday 2 September. To help us manage the arrangements for this, especially selecting an appropriate Glasgow City Centre venue, I'd be grateful if you could RSVP here.
I'm conducting a site visit, that's what we call it in events management circles
, of a potential venue on Monday morning so will hopefully be able to announce this in the next few days.
Talking about birthdays, we broke Business Banter protocol on Thursday to pause for a minute and say a very best birthday wish to John Hamilton. He assured me that it wasn't a Big Birthday until next year. John, when you get to our age, every birthday is a big birthday.
How has the Business Banter benefitted some of those who came along and met other business people they may not otherwise have met?

More recently I got a phone call to thank me from David Yeoman for the opportunity to meet up with Brian Canavan at a recent Business Banter and take forward a number of ideas with each other.
What is networking?
The Workplace Experience Programme, International StudentsRobert Calder has asked me to let all the Business Banter group know about The Workplace Experience Programme for International Students (including EU) which aims to develop a range of opportunities enabling Scottish business to engage with international students.
The benefits of engaging with an international student:
A cost effective way to tackle projects that contribute towards business growth and productivity
A couple of events to report on in this week's blog post.
Building Banter
The Building Banter was launched on Friday in Kilmarnock with almost 40 attending the event.
Like the Business Banter Social Media Week versions (see below), the Building Banter is slightly more structured, centered around a few speakers talking about relevant issues in the industry. However, networking is at the core of the event and all who came along had ample opportunity to meet current and new contacts throughout the morning.
Both the local MSP and Council Leader spoke at the launch which says something about the importance the construction sector has on the economy.
A couple of regular Business Banterers were in attendance too - Frank Cozzo and Colin Abercrombie who helped me greatly by taking a number of photographs which we've published here.
Following the Business Banter Survey we conducted in the spring time we've been working behind the scenes to evolve the Business Banter model so watch this space as they say for further developments.
Edinburgh Business Banter
The Edinburgh Business Banter - Lite version continues to take place and invites others from across the country who may be in Edinburgh of a Tuesday morning and fancy joining them in Lothian Road's Caffe Nero between 0800 and 1000.
A quick visit to the Business Banter home page will allow everyone to RSVP to each Edinburgh Banter so that they can gauge who's coming along. Hope to make a re-appearance myself in the coming weeks too.
Social Media Week

Hope to feature Social Media Week here on a regular basis. This is a key series of events across Glasgow during the week 19-23 September and glad that Tim and Daniella have such a pivotal role in pulling it all together.
We are delighted to announce that we now have 5 Business Banters, one each morning, in the approved schedule and are currently in discussions to pull the programme together.
Would like to thank the following people so far, with a few more to follow.

The basic outline for each event is as follows. Start at 08:00 with 5 or 6 micro presentations between 9:00 and 9:30 and then, after a general Q&A session, open networking until 11:00. Like the Business Banter itself they presentations will not be sales pitches and anyone who delves into that area will just get hooked from the presentation area!! ;-)
As ever each event will take place in Esquires Coffee House and we hope to have social media expertise from across the spectrum - construction to telecoms, marketing to hospitality, finance and legal to the creative sector.
More details will be available each week and hope that the wider Banter community will find one or more of the events of interest to them that week. So whether you are interested in finding out more about the social media tools themselves or how a variety of companies are utilising them to develop meaningful content for their target audience then I hope you'll find out more at these events.
To help us stage and record these Business Banter Specials for Social Media Week would welcome some help in the areas below. As ever we'll promote any company or individual who is able to help us with any of the items. I'll also send out individual requests to Banterers I think may be able to help directly.
Before we go on to talk about the Business Banter newbies last week just a further reminder that the Business Golf Association event is taking place on 25 August and I'd really appreciate any help in getting this event into people's mindset for that date. While the Business Banter remains a free event, it'll be the success of the BGA and a few other events I'm looking to kick start in the coming months which will help fund the time and resource in putting the Business Banter together.
