When you attend events on your own behalf and talk to people about what you do, you often get asked/told "This must be like a busman's holiday for you."
In some way it's quite true. On Friday night I attended the SCDI Awards dinner at the EICC in Edinburgh. The venue itself is great, although who's idea it was to have four pillars stuck in the middle of the hall must have some strange ideas about line of sight at events.
For such a big room, there were easily 500+ people there on Friday, the ceiling is pretty low. While not an ideak room therefore, the organisers successfully managed to get around these by having four large screens on three of the walls, so no matter where you were in the room you could see the hostess Sally Magnusson, award winners and guest speakers and the excellent Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
The room decor was very warm and the table decorations descrete.
By all accounts everyone had a good time and that should be the key criteria when judging the success of this tyoe of event.
So yes, it was a busman's holiday as I now have a couple of ideas I might use in our own events, but I had a really nice time too, met a few old friends and a couple of new ones which is what these types of events are all about.
