What does it take to deliver Corporate Social Responsibility
We’re working on three fronts to become socially responsible. But is it enough? Worse still is it too much for a small company to take on?
When you are a small company it sometimes takes a leap of faith to do all the things you would like to do in relation to be a responsible entity.
We have recently signed up for the Glasgow’s Living Wage Scheme which guarantees our team a working wage. Not the minimum wage, but a working one. No doubt someone with a financial head on would be knocking on my door telling me about all the issues that could arise. Cash flow, lower margins on projects, etc.
All true but how do you gain the respect and loyalty of your staff if you pay them a pittance. Pay peanuts and don’t expect anything other than monkeys. With no disrespect to some monkeys I know!!
I also met up earlier today with the lovely Veronica Ferguson from Scottish Business in the Community who was able to give details on a couple of options about working with the third sector, an area we want to get involved in from a commercial point of view, after all they host a number of events across the board. In return we can offer some of our knowledge and experience to others involved not only in organising events but general business too. There’ll be a time commitment to support any organisation we work with but it will be a good learning journey for us as well as this is an important sector we want to break into.
Finally we’re interviewing 27 or so pupils from St.Columbkille’s school tomorrow. They want to develop an Events team that will organise and deliver all the school events this year. We’ve already developed and sent through the job descriptions, the kids have applied for the various posts and tomorrow we’ll see who fills what post as follows:
Events Director
Team Leaders
Venue Team Leader with 2 venue location co-ordinators and 2 venue decoration co-ordinators
AV & Lighting Team Leader with 2 Sound technicians and 2 Lighting Technicians
Marketing Team Leader with 2 Sponsorship coordinators and 3 graphic Designers
Finance Team Leader with 1 Income Executive and 1 Expenses Executive
Catering Team Leader (staff have all walked out on strike so they are on their own!!)
Administration team Leader with 2 Registration co-ordinators, 2 Badging co-ordinators and a VIP Liaison officer
Again we are offering our time and experience and over the course of the next six months or so we will return to the school to mentor the various teams and help them organise their events successfully.
What do we get out of it? Putting something back into the community, getting some good laughs from the kids with some of their ideas, basically feeling good about ourselves and maybe seeing how we could improve the Events training package we have for others.
