Beardmore press release

Some of the delegates at the PPCI Conference were asking how the technology was made available to deliver the live feed into the auditorium.

Have attached a press release from the Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre to help explain.

New technology boosts medical conferences

One of Scotland's top venues for medical conferences has just got a positive diagnosis thanks to a new state of the art teaching and conferencing system.

The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre specialises in conferences for the NHS as well as groups like the British Medical Association, Royal College of Nurses and leading medical suppliers like Vascutek and Boston Scientific.

With a wide range of conference facilities and able to accommodate conferences of up to 240 delegates, the Beardmore is ideal for dedicated medical events or as a headquarters for medical groups attending larger meetings at the nearby Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.

To offer an even better service to these customers, the Beardmore has recently installed a world class system which allows live sound and images to be beamed directly to their auditorium from the cardiac catheterisation laboratories (cath labs) at the adjoining Golden Jubilee National Hospital.

The new technology was first used by world-renowned Cardiologist, Professor Masahiko Ochiai, from Showa University in Japan, as he demonstrated how to perform a new method of opening blocked heart arteries to fellow clinicians. The high bandwidth fibre optic connection and live two-way audio enabled the remote audience to see the same high resolution imaging as those working in the lab.

Consultant Cardiologist Keith Oldroyd, Clinical Director of Cardiology at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, who helped organise the Professor's visit to Scotland, is delighted with the system.

He said: "The high quality also meant that the person demonstrating the procedure could challenge the audience about aspects of the procedure in fine detail, while the audience could also question the procedure and respond to questions in a more meaningful and interactive way.

"We were able to involve many more clinicians in the training thanks to our new audio visual system. This means that not only will our patients benefit from today's teaching session, but patients from across Scotland may also have a better clinical outcome in years to come."

Plans are in place to roll out the innovative audio visual system across theatres and other clinical areas as part of a new clinical skills and research centre opening in late 2010 - meaning even more conference organisers will be able to opt for this modern teaching method as part of their event. The Beardmore also plans to offer residential conference groups the ability to broadcast their own event content to delegates using the iMac system. Ends

Notes to editors:The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre has established itself as an integral part of the NHS since being purchased by the Scottish Executive in 2002. Along with the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, we make up the NHS National Waiting Times Centre Board.
